Sony established the ultraportable B5-sized notebook genre years ago with their 505. The X505 Carbon Fiber ultralight ignited the marketplace. Now with the G3, Sony's innovation is again on display.
The Sony Vaio G3 is one of the lightest "fully-usable" notebooks ever produced. Breaking the two-pound barrier with a full a 12.1" XGA TFT and 17mm keypitch keyboard seemed improbable simply because these are not shrinkable features.
Sony did it by utilizing one of the most advanced materials available: carbon fiber. And, they did it by taking advantage of their past experiences with carbon fiber notebooks. For its many advantages, Carbon fiber is a complex material to work with, and Sony has built expertise. Carbon fiber is lighter, stronger, better at heat dissipation, and more rigid than the next best choice (aluminum or magnesium alloy). The Vaio G3's top and bottom external casing is multi-layer carbon fiber and the palm rest is carbon mold. The G3's carbon construction is more thorough than its carbon forebears, the X505 and the SZ/carbon.
This casing, along with a shock-mounted HDD, make the Vaio G3 very durable. It is tested to survive a drop (although not guaranteed to do so), and should be able to withstand 120kg of weight (although not guaranteed to do so).
Thoughtful extras include a quiet fan and keyboard, and dual-internal wifi antennas to improve reception. The Intel Core 2 Duo SU9600 (1.60 GHz), 8.0gb max RAM, and 256GB SSD provide plenty of power. And wifi, Firewire, 2 x USB 2.0, and VGA provide plenty of convenience.
The Sony Vaio G3 is an exceptional and unique machine for the frequent traveler. When purchased from Dynamism, the Vaio G3 includes unlimited toll-free tech phone and email support, and Dynamism's Fedex rescue service warranty.
